Do this two weeks before you leave, not at the border. Since 1 January 2026 a clean transport zone has covered about 60% of Kraków — the whole old town, Kazimierz and Podgórze — and a car on foreign plates must be registered at sct.zdmk.krakow.pl before it drives in. Not because it is dirty: the cameras check a Polish register your plate is not in, and what the system cannot find it cannot clear. Verification takes up to 14 days; the fine is up to 500 zł.
The second thing is cheerful. A park and ride sells a 10 zł ticket that is also unlimited zone I public transport all day, and costs nothing if you already hold a transport ticket. Four hours on the central kerb is 39 zł.
First lookThe trumpet goes off every hour, including at three in the morning
A bugler plays from the tower of St Mary's on the hour, day and night, from four windows in turn, and stops mid-phrase. Since 1927 the noon call has gone out live on Polish radio.
The Rynek has sides slightly over 200 metres, laid out in 1257, and everything worth walking to sits inside a park that used to be the wall. I cross the marked centre in twenty minutes and never want the car once I am inside it.
Tourist trapsTwo stories Kraków sells, and one ticket that will not scan
People queue at a corner of Wawel to press their hands on a wall said to be one of the earth's seven sacred energy stones. Mieczysław Tobiasz found nothing in the sources in 1967; Karol Estreicher blamed the man who ran Wawel's restoration in the 1920s. The castle roped the corner off in 2001, and I walk past it.
The costlier trap is a ticket. Since 4 October 2025 every online ticket to Schindler's Factory is personalised and photo ID is checked at the door, so the resale sites with official-sounding names are selling a document in someone else's name for more money. Buy from muzeumkrakowa.pl, wawel.krakow.pl, mariacki.com and visit.auschwitz.org.
Local pickThe canteen the tax office subsidises
Bar Mleczny Pod Temidą is a milk bar on Grodzka, on the Royal Route, a hundred metres off the tourist flow and priced as if it were not. Milk bars are not nostalgia: they are still subsidised in 2026, by the tax administration, under a Finance Ministry regulation of 2015.
The mechanism explains the food. The subsidy is 70% of the raw-material cost — ninety-five listed dairy and vegetable ingredients — and the markup may not exceed 45%. In exchange the place must be self-service, alcohol-free and open to all. Hence the hatch, the absent beer and the price of the pierogi.
Survival ruleTwo-tenths, and the headlights stay on in July
Poland's drink-drive limit is 0.2 per mille — low enough that one drink can reach it, and enforced by roadside testing visitors consistently underestimate. Treat it as zero.
Dipped headlights are compulsory 24 hours a day, all year, noon in July included. The compulsory kit is short and not the one you packed for the rest of Europe: a warning triangle and a fire extinguisher, no hi-vis vest and no first-aid kit. Motorways run at 140 km/h, the EU's highest, and studded tyres are banned.

- Foreign plates
- Register the plate at sct.zdmk.krakow.pl before you enter, even if the car complies. Polish cars are matched automatically against the national vehicle register; a foreign plate is not in that register, so the cameras cannot clear it. Verification takes up to 14 days and you upload a scan of the registration document.

- Up to 500 zł under art. 96c of the offences code, enforced by number-plate camera. A non-compliant vehicle can still pay to enter during the transition: 2.50 zł an hour, or a monthly pass at 100 zł in 2026, 250 zł in 2027 and 500 zł in 2028. From 1 January 2029 paid access ends and non-compliant vehicles are simply barred.
- EV
- Battery electric and hydrogen: allowed, but a foreign-registered EV still has to go through the same individual registration. Being electric does not skip the paperwork.
The scheme is under appeal. On 14 January 2026 the Regional Administrative Court in Kraków (III SA/Kr 1167/25 and III SA/Kr 1191/25) struck down two parts of the resolution — the definition of "resident" based on administrative registration, and the exemption limited to public medical facilities. The judgment is not final and the zone operates unchanged in the meantime, so check sct.zdmk.krakow.pl before travelling.
Paid parking runs 09:00 to 22:00 across three subzones. Central subzone A charges 9, 10, 11 zł for the first three hours and drops back to 9 zł from the fourth — 39 zł for four hours. B is 8/9/10/8, C is 7/8/9/7. Not paying is 400 zł, halved to 200 zł within seven days.
Now the part that catches everybody. B and C are Monday to Saturday, so their Sunday is free. Subzone A runs Monday to Sunday, and the city's wording is that parking there is free on trading Sundays and charged on the rest. Poland has eight trading Sundays in 2026, so in the centre Sunday is free eight times a year and charged forty-four — the inverse of every other city on this site.
Inside the Planty a restricted traffic zone sits on top, and its free permit does not cover parking.

02 · Towed725 zł, and the pound will not take your money
Ring 986, the municipal guard, first: they order most tows and can say whether the car was lifted or stolen. The pound is at ul. Jerzego Turowicza 9 in Podgórze Duchackie, open 24 hours, on 601 213 722 — call before you cross the city, because they ask you to.
The tow is 725 zł up to 3.5 tonnes, storage 62 zł a day, and the trap is that you cannot pay at the pound. The money goes by transfer or over the counter at ul. Centralna 53, nowhere near Turowicza, and you need a written release from whoever ordered the tow.

- The pound is open 24 hours a day, every day. ZDMK's office, where the money actually changes hands, is not.
- What it costs
- 725 zł to tow a vehicle up to 3.5 tonnes, plus 62 zł for every day it sits there — 2026 rates. You cannot pay at the pound: ZDMK says so in as many words, so the transfer has to clear or you have to queue at Centralna 53 before the gate opens for you.
- Bring
- The written release from whoever ordered the tow — Straż Miejska or the police — plus the vehicle documents and photo identification, and proof the money has been paid. For a hire car, ring the rental company first: the registration document is theirs.
03 · EVElectric parks free — if the camera can tell it is electric
Fully electric cars are exempt from paid parking under national law, and ZDMK confirms in writing that this covers foreign-registered cars. Hybrids get nothing.
Then read how it is applied. An inspector identifies an exempt car by a Polish green plate, or a hologram sticker no longer issued. Your car has neither, and ZDMK's remedy is to appeal afterwards with a scan of the registration document. So you are legally exempt, will probably be ticketed anyway, and should photograph the bay.
The cheapest published rate in the city is the city's own: 2.30 zł/kWh at the barrier-controlled park and rides. GreenWay you can price before you arrive — 2.05 zł/kWh AC, 3.25 DC ad hoc — though it blocks 100 zł on the card. ORLEN is a flat 2.69 on DC but wants an app and an account first. Powerdot at Galeria Krakowska has a real contactless terminal and no published price at all.
Where to charge
- The park and rides — the cheapest published electricity in Kraków — P+R Krowodrza Górka 4 points, P+R Pachońskiego 4, P+R Górka Narodowa 10. 2.30 zł/kWh at the barrier-controlled park and rides, 3.50 zł at open-system Swoszowice. The city publishes the number, which is more than most operators here manage
- GreenWay — the rate you can know before you arrive — The largest published network in Poland, across the city and on the approaches. Ad hoc, with no account: 2.05 zł/kWh on AC and 3.25 zł/kWh on DC, from the tariff effective 1 May 2026. One-off charging without registering is supported, but it blocks 100 zł on the card and releases it afterwards, so watch for that on a foreign card
- Powerdot at the two malls — the card that simply works — Galeria Krakowska and Galeria Kazimierz. Every Powerdot unit carries a PayOne card terminal — contactless card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or QR, no app and no account. CCS to 150–160 kW at both. The price is not published anywhere: it is per station, shown on the screen. Convenience, at a number you only learn once you are standing there
- ORLEN Charge — cheap, and closed to anyone without the app — The national fuel network, including the motorway service areas around the city. 2.69 zł/kWh on DC at every power tier since 1 April 2026, and 1.95 zł on AC — the cheapest published fast charging you will meet. The catch is access: it needs an ORLEN ID account and the ORLEN VITAY app with a card loaded before you plug in. There is no contactless terminal on the unit
- IONITY Skawina — the fast one, at a price nobody will tell you — DW44 in Skawina, beside the S7/DK7 bypass south-west of the city. Six chargers to 350 kW, the only ultra-fast hub on a Kraków approach. IONITY publishes no Polish per-kWh price — its own support page says the price depends on tariff, subscription and location — and there is no bank-card terminal, only QR, app, RFID or Plug & Charge

Ten sites, 1,625 spaces. At the barrier-controlled ones the 10 zł ticket carries one person on unlimited zone I journeys for the parking day, and 25 zł covers a group. Hold a Kraków transport ticket already and the parking is free. P+R Czerwone Maki is the one I aim for: 192 spaces, 04:30 to 02:30, staffed round the clock. And P+R Swoszowice works backwards: no barrier, no parking ticket, free only if you hold a transport ticket that day and 150 zł if you do not.
Free or nearly-free spots
Ten park and rides, and the parking ticket is the tram ticket
Ten sites, 1,625 spaces. At the barrier-controlled ones a 10 zł ticket entitles one person to unlimited journeys on Kraków public transport in zone I for the parking day; 25 zł covers up to five adults, or a parent and child up to seven people. And if you already hold a valid Kraków transport ticket, the parking itself is free. P+R Czerwone Maki has 192 spaces, opens 04:30 and closes 02:30, and is staffed 24 hours. Overstaying the parking day is 250 zł.
The one that works the other way round
P+R Swoszowice is the one open-system site — no barrier. There you do not buy a parking ticket at all: parking is free provided you hold a valid public transport ticket that day, and 150 zł if you do not. It is the cheapest way into the city and the easiest one to get wrong, because nothing stops you driving in.
The kerb is free from 22:00, and on fourteen named days
Paid parking runs 09:00 to 22:00; outside those hours the kerb costs nothing anywhere in the zone. Subzones B and C are free all day Sunday. ZDMK also names fourteen public holidays on which all three subzones are free, including 1 and 6 January, both days of Easter, 1 and 3 May, Corpus Christi, 15 August, 1 and 11 November, and 24, 25 and 26 December. That list is published; do not assume a holiday is on it.
Hotels with free parking
- Any hotel inside the clean transport zone — There is no hotel exemption and no guest permit — I checked all three registers Map. The SCT resolution's exemption list covers residents, patients, healthcare vehicles, disabled drivers, motorcycles, historic and state vehicles — no accommodation category. ZDMK's parking subscriptions run KR, N, M, A, I, O, Z and DOA, none of them for hotels or their guests. The guest registers the car themselves, at sct.zdmk.krakow.pl, and pays the kerb like everyone else
- Interparking Kraków (Parking Wawel, Unity Centre) — Booked online rather than through a hotel Map. If your hotel has no car park of its own — and most inside the Planty do not — booking Parking Wawel online at 95 zł instead of 120 zł at the barrier is the single biggest saving available to a guest in the old town
⚠ The small print on 'free' parking
- A compliant foreign car still has to register before it enters. Kraków's clean transport zone has been in force since 1 January 2026 and covers roughly 60% of the city, everything inside the fourth ring road — the whole old town, Kazimierz and Podgórze. Polish-plated cars are matched automatically against the national vehicle register; foreign plates are not in that register, so the city requires them to enrol at sct.zdmk.krakow.pl even when fully compliant. Verification takes up to 14 days.
- The thresholds are date-or-standard, not date-and-standard. A petrol or LPG car passes on Euro 4 or newer, or on a build year of 2005 or later. A diesel car up to 3.5 tonnes passes on Euro 6 or newer, or on 2014 or later. Either limb is enough — which lets in a lot of older petrol cars people assume are barred. Enforcement is by number-plate camera and the fine under art. 96c of the offences code is up to 500 zł.
- Sunday is the expensive day, and it is the opposite of what you expect. In subzone A the meters run Monday to Sunday, 09:00 to 22:00, and the city's own words are that parking is free on trading Sundays and charged on the rest. Poland has eight trading Sundays in 2026, so subzone A is free on eight Sundays and charged on the other forty-four. Subzones B and C are Monday to Saturday only.
- Not paying costs 400 zł, halved to 200 zł if it reaches ZDMK within seven days. The tariff in subzone A climbs 9, 10, 11 zł for the first three hours and settles back to 9 zł from the fourth, so four hours is 39 zł — which makes the penalty ten hours of legitimate parking, and makes the seven-day window worth acting on rather than posting home.
- Poland's drink-drive limit is 0.2 per mille, and headlights stay on all year.
