In Utrecht the street costs more than the garage. The inner-centre kerb is €8.01 an hour, charged Monday to Saturday until one in the morning, on Sunday from noon to six, and — the city's own words — with no longer any exception for public holidays. The ANWB puts it plainly: garages in the centre are cheaper than parking on the street.
The cheapest way in is not a garage either. The park and ride sells a combi ticket: €8.50 for the car and a same-day return on the tram or bus for up to five people. For a family that is less than one hour on the kerb.
First lookBicycles by the ten thousand, and one tower over everything
Under the station square is the bicycle parking ProRail calls the largest in the world, 12,500 spaces, the first 24 hours free. That tells you who this city is built for.
Everything else answers to the Dom tower: 112.32 metres, the tallest church tower in the Netherlands, visible from every approach road. I use it as a compass and never need the satnav once I am on foot.
Tourist trapsThe kerb that charges on Sunday, and the card that does not count
The classic mistake is assuming Sunday is free. In zone A1 it is charged from 12:00 to 18:00, and on public holidays like any weekday. A day card on the street is €56.13; the Jaarbeurs car parks by the station charge €31 for the same day.
The second trap is at the park and ride. The combi discount works only with an OV-chipkaart or a U-OV card. Check in with a contactless bank card or phone — OVpay — and it does not count. My advice: buy the card before you drive in.
Local pickLight on the canals after dark
The Trajectum Lumen route is a 3-kilometre walk of light art through the old centre, lit every evening from sunset to midnight, starting at the Winkel van Utrecht on the Domplein. I walk it after dinner, when the day visitors have gone and the wharves are quiet.
Survival ruleLeave by one, and check in last in the centre
The combi ticket has three conditions and people miss the third. Check in and out with an OV-chipkaart or U-OV card; make your last check-in in the centre, so the system sees a return trip; and drive out by 01:00. Break any of them and the barrier charges the normal rate — €3 an hour at Westraven, capped at €15.02.

Zero-emission zone since 1 January 2025. The plan to stretch the car zone over the whole built-up area on 1 January 2027 has been postponed.
Zone A1, the inner centre, is €8.01 an hour, Monday to Saturday 07:00–01:00 and Sunday 12:00–18:00; a day card is €56.13, an evening card €28.07. Zone A2 is €6.94 until 23:00; the ring zones €5.34. Not paying is €77.70 plus the hourly rate, and three unpaid fines can bring a clamp.
The garages are where the sense is. By the station, Hoog Catharijne P1 charges €0.95 per started 11 minutes and €40 for 24 hours; P5, the big one with 1,174 spaces, caps at €45. The Jaarbeurs car parks on the west side are €4.75 an hour and €31 a day, and outside the low-emission zone. The most central garage, Springweg, is €7.12 an hour and €71.23 for a day — the location costs double.
The low-emission zone bars diesel cars below emission class 5, with no day exemption on sale for them. Petrol, LPG and electric cars need nothing. The fine is €130.

The depot is Bergings Combinatie Utrecht, phone 030 241 5060, option 1. Monday to Friday 08:00–18:00, Saturday 09:00–13:00, Saturday afternoon by appointment only, Sunday not at all. If the car is not there, ring the police on 0900 8844; it may have been stolen.
The price is €485 to tow and €40 a day — a pound bill at Amsterdam's level. A tow started but not finished is €420, so run. Pay on the spot by card or cash, and bring ID, the registration document and the key. The city tows for obstruction, danger, too many unpaid fines and overstaying the three-day rule.

03 · EV€0.42 a kWh and no fine for lingering
TotalEnergies runs Utrecht's public chargers and publishes the rates: €0.42 per kWh on regular chargers, €0.67 at 50 kW and €0.80 at 100–300 kW, with no blocking or idle fees. The city even says it does not enforce against cars left after charging. Parking in a paid zone is still paid on top.
My choice is P+R Westraven: 62 chargers, the most I found in the city, where the parking is already the cheapest thing going. The Jaarbeurs has 40 and Hoog Catharijne P5 34.

04 · Free spotsNothing is free, but five people for €8.50 comes close
Utrecht has no free park and ride. It has the combi: at Westraven and Utrecht Science Park it is €8.50, at Berlijnplein in Leidsche Rijn €8.00, and one ticket carries up to five people into town and back. Westraven has 1,385 spaces and a tram to the centre in about 12 minutes; Science Park has 2,000.
Free kerb exists only at the city's edge — the ANWB names Overvecht, Lunetten and parts of Leidsche Rijn — and the city is extending paid parking district by district. The Nox Hotel on Keistraat charges €40 from check-in to check-out and prints it.
Free or nearly-free spots
€8.50 for the car and five tram tickets
Utrecht has no free park and ride, but it has the next best thing: the combi ticket, parking plus a same-day return on public transport for up to five people on one ticket. P+R Westraven and P+R Utrecht Science Park are €8.50, Berlijnplein in Leidsche Rijn €8.00. Check in and out with an OV-chipkaart or U-OV card — OVpay does not qualify — make your last check-in in the centre, and drive out by 01:00. Without the combi, Westraven is €3 an hour, capped at €15.02.
Jaarbeurs: €31 a day, next to the station
The trade-fair car parks on the west side of the station are €4.75 an hour and €31 a day, with over 3,200 spaces and 40 chargers, and they sit outside the low-emission zone. Utrecht Centraal is next door and the old centre a walk beyond it. On big fair days — The GetAway, the old Vakantiebeurs, on 7–10 January 2027 — they fill.
Free kerb only at the city's edge — and shrinking
According to the ANWB, free parking in Utrecht on weekdays is really only possible at the edge of the city, in districts such as Overvecht, Lunetten and parts of Leidsche Rijn. The city is extending paid parking district by district, Lunetten and Zuilen included, so a street that was free last year may not be now. Read the sign every time.
Hotels with free parking
- The Nox Hotel — Keistraat 8 — in the old centre; guests park at My Way Parkeren, Jansdam 1 Map. €40 from check-in at 15:00 to check-out at 11:00, and €7 an hour outside those times — stated on the hotel's own page
- Grand Hotel Karel V — Geertebolwerk 1 — a former monastery inside the old town Map. Has its own parking spaces in the old town, which is rare here; the price is not on its site, so ask when you book
⚠ The small print on 'free' parking

- An unpaid session is a €77.70 fine plus the hourly tariff. Three or more unpaid fines and the car can be clamped — €192, paid at the BghU counter at Stadsplateau 1 — and if the clamp is not paid within 24 hours the car is towed.
- The P+R combi discount needs an OV-chipkaart or a U-OV card. OVpay — a contactless bank card or phone — does not qualify, and your last check-in has to be in the centre, with the car out by 01:00.
- The low-emission zone bars diesel cars below emission class 5; a car on any other fuel may enter, and there is nothing to register. Utrecht sells no day exemption for a diesel car. The fine is €130. The Jaarbeurs car parks are outside the zone.
- Several garages are low: Q-Park La Vie and Hoog Catharijne P3 are 1.90 m, Springweg and Hoog Catharijne P1 2.00 m. A roof box belongs at the Jaarbeurs or the park and ride.
